People throng the Agartala railway station on Sunday to see the rail engine arriving at the station.
Ambassa (Tripura): Marking a new phase in rail transport in Tripura, the trial run of a rail service from Ambassa to Agartala was conducted on Sunday.
Deputy General Manager of North-east Frontier Railway, Guru Prakash, travelling in the tractor engine along with Superintendent of Police of Dhalai district, Anish Prasad, said the pilot engine, which left Ambassa in the morning, will travel 68 km to reach the Tripura capital in four hours.
Tracks have been laid on the 68 km-long stretch from Ambassa to Agartala through the hills of Long Terai and Atharamura and there are three tunnels of which one is 1,856 metres long.
A full-fledged passenger train will run on the same track on Monday on a trial basis and if everything was found in place the formal train service would be launched in August, Mr. Prakash said.
The lines were laid on narrow gauge in broad gauge format and can easily be converted into broad gauge.
Tripura got its first railway link of only 13 km between Kalkalighat of Karimganj district of Assam and Dharmanagar in North Tripura district 44 years ago. — PTI
