Youth club members to be exposed to eco aspects

Most enjoyable activity will be bathing elephants

MYSORE: The Youth Club of Mysore Zoo, which has been functioning for the past 16 years, has been reaching out to the student community to create a cadre of environmentally responsible and conservation-conscious groups.

The Youth Club for 2008-09 was inaugurated here on Sunday.

Zoo management

Its members will meet every Sunday for 25 weeks, and will be exposed to various aspects of zoo management, wildlife and environment.

They will have both field work as well as theory classes apart from listening to the experiences of field biologists, wildlife scientists and resource persons from across the country. The atmosphere would be friendly and learning would be fun.

Passion for subject

It would instil interest and passion for the subject, said Vijay Ranjan Singh, Executive Director of Mysore Zoo.

There will also be bird watching, visits to lakes, field visits to organic farms including visits to Natural History Museum, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary and Bandipur National Park.

Field work

The field work for the club members will include learning about animal behaviour from zoo keepers, cleaning enclosures, gardening, conducting visitors’ survey, interaction, collection and study of pug marks. The most enjoyable and popular activity is reckoned to be feeding and bathing elephants.

Resource persons

In the coming weeks, the zoo is planning to get resource persons ranging from zoologists to wildlife biologists, ornithologists to specialists on Himalayan flora and fauna. This is aimed at enriching children’s knowledge, and giving them an introduction and first-hand experience of wildlife and environment.
