Chitradurga: The district administration and the district police jointly conducted a survey of the city’s main roads here on Sunday in order to help regularise traffic. Both departments have decided to install dividers from S.J.M. Dental College Circle to Mahatma Gandhi Circle. Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas and Superintendent of Police Labhu Ram, who conducted the survey, told presspersons that owing to the increase in vehicular movement, and the absence of dividers, accidents were becoming frequent on the main roads. “To avoid this and to regularise traffic, we have decided to make certain changes on the roads,” Mr. Biswas said. He said Rs. 3.75 lakh had been released for the purpose. On the renovation of the city market, he said it would be demolished to pave way for new buildings. Construction work would be carried out at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh, and the basement would be reserved for parking of vehicles, he added. He said that for smoother pedestrian movement, flower and fruit shops would be relocated from Mahatma Gandhi Circle to Sante Honda area. Mr. Biswas also inspected construction work of shops near traveller’s bungalow where Stree Shakti Self Help Groups are supposed to establish themselves. On Sunday morning, the City Municipal Council conducted a drive to remove all encroachments and illegal buildings near Venkateshwar talkies. CMC commissioner S.P. Mudhol said all shops being constructed on pavements would be removed. The CMC also conducted a drive to clear clogged drains as a part of its anti-malaria campaign.
