Disqualification is for a period of five years All elected members furnished the statements THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 8,984 persons who contested the last civic elections (September 2005) and failed to furnish their expenditure statement before the State Election Commission have been disqualified from contesting local body elections for the next five years. State Election Commissioner P. Kamalkutty said in an official release here on Sunday that disqualification proceedings were initiated against 8,085 persons according to Section 33 of the Panchayati Raj Act and 899 candidates as per Section 89 of the Municipalities Act. They include 71 candidates to district panchayats, 539 to block panchayats, 7,475 to grama panchayats, 649 to municipalities and 250 to corporations. Thiruvananthapuram, with 1,029, tops the list of disqualified candidates. As many as 104 candidates who contested to the corporation, 74 to municipalities, nine to the district panchayat, 50 to block panchayats and 792 candidates who contested to grama panchayats have been disqualified. Kasaragod with 201 has the lowest number of disqualified candidates. They include 28 persons who contested to municipalities, three to the district panchayat, six to block panchayats and 164 to grama panchayats. The following is the break-up of disqualified candidates in other districts with the figures of corporation, municipalities, district panchayat, block and grama panchayats: Kollam – total 910, corporation (37), municipalities (22), district panchayat (2), block panchayats (55), grama panchayats (794). Pathanamthitta – total 572, (48, 03, 39, 282), Alappuzha – total 813 (104, 09, 42, 658) , Kottayam –total 709 (39, 06, 41, 623), Idukki – total 397 (14, 01, 29, 353), Ernakulam – total 892 (44, 82, 03, 56, 707), Thrissur – total 774 (26,86, 04, 21, 637), Palakkad – total 676 (44,09, 59, 564), Malappuram – total 878 (64, 06, 52, 756), Kozhikode – total 640 (39, 17, 09, 58, 517), Wayanad – total 219 (04, 04, 09, 20), and Kannur total – 274 (23, 03, 22, 226). Candidates who contested in elections to 71 local self-government institutions submitted the expenditure statements on time. Show-cause notices were issued to 15,000 persons. All elected members furnished the statements.
