Highwayvys in Theni, Aliyar in Coimbatore and Kanyakumari would be modernised A total of 91 town panchayats identified in this connection THENI: Facilities in town panchayats that have traditional and religious tourists’ attractions in the State would be improved to attract more tourists. Bus stands would be modernised, hotels, rest rooms and shopping facilities would be developed, according to K. Gopal, Commissioner for Town Panchayats. He presided over a review meeting of solid waste management being implemented in town panchayats held at the Collectorate here on Friday. A total of 91 town panchayats were identified in this connection. To begin with, Highwayvys in Theni, Aliyar in Coimbatore and Kanyakumari would be modernised in collaboration with Department of Tourism to attract more tourists and boost revenue of these town pancahyats. A guest house would be constructed at a cost of Rs.50 lakh in Highwayvys. Top priority has been given for effective implementation of solid waste management and safe disposal of drainage water in all town panchayats. Forty-five town panchayats around municipalities were chosen to extend waste water recycling scheme. Waste water generated in town panchayats would be treated by the municipalities till they construct their own waste water recycling plant, he added. Marketing facilities would be created in the compost yards in town panchayats that converted domestic wastes into vermicompost. Steps would be taken to provide weighing machines and packing materials, he added. “Ultimate aim is to make town panchayats clean and green.” Solar lightsSolar lights would be installed in crematoriums in town panchayats to cut electricity expenses. More trees should be grown on the crematorium campus to make its surroundings green. A sum of Rs.50 lakh has been sanctioned to five town panchayats in the district this year to enhance facilities and basic amenities. With rapid development and urbanisation of town panchayats, needs of the people have been growing every day. Executive officers and elected representatives of town panchayats should work together in improving facilities, he advised. He asked the town panchayat presidents to send long term plans to the government for approval and sanction of funds. The commissioner also praised all town panchayats for cent per cent tax recovery.
