SCB starts demolition at Tadbun crossroads

HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has made a beginning in decongesting the busy Tadbun crossroads. It took up demolition of a key building on the corner adjoining the old airport runway to facilitate taking up junction improvement on Sunday morning.

The crossroads forms a crucial part of the national highway towards Nagpur and traffic unfailingly gets clogged due to the steep corner. The jam happens as there is no free left splay with vehicles going straight towards Bapujinagar occupying the carriageway during all times, worse during peak hours.

The three-storeyed building knocked down today was marked for demolition long time ago but got delayed as the Roads & Buildings Department and the SCB had locked horns over payment of structural compensation to the owner as they tossed the responsibility on each other. Traffic from Tadbun was diverted at Pizza Corner.

After months of trying to convince R&B Department to pay compensation, the SCB authorities finally decided to do the job themselves as junction improvement work too was getting held up. “We decided not to wait any further as the traffic situation was getting worse. We will pay structural compensation to the owner despite the construction being unauthorised with deviations from the sanctioned plan,” said SCB CEO V. Premchand.

The compensation could be about Rs. 25 lakh for the building which used to house some shops. Such was its location that buses and trucks used to regularly chip off its corner while manoeuvring the sharp curve. Mr. Premchand said two more buildings in the line would be demolished in the next few days to free the left splay for traffic.

Experts to inspect

Experts from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University would be inspecting the site to make slight alterations to the junction improvement work, he said. Three sides of the junction have vacant defence land and authorities are mulling to re-align the junction by a few metres to make use of it and avoid complete demolitions of private buildings.
