NEW FACILITY: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy laying the foundation for the multi-storeyed residential apartments for Government staff in Hyderabad on Sunday.

HYDERABAD: To meet the demand for providing accommodation to officials in the city, the government has decided to take up phased construction of multi-storeyed residential apartments in existing dilapidated quarters. “High increase” of land rates in the city has also necessitated the decision.

In the first phase, 224 flats are to be built at Malakpet. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy left immediately after laying foundation stone for the proposed project here on Sunday.

To be built at a cost of Rs. 33.84 crore, the flats consist of 168 ‘B’ type (each three-bedroom flat of 1,070 sft) and 56 ‘A’ type (each three bedroom flat of 1,230 sft).

According to an official release, the administrative sanction for the project was given on July 19 last year.

Tenders invited

The tenders were invited on e-procurement platform and work was entrusted to M/s Chabbra’s Associates at 4.59 per cent excess over the estimated contract value of Rs. 29.49 crore, with a period of completion of 30 months.

2,733 quarters

There are 2,733 government quarters in the city at Erramanzil, Punjagutta, Kundan Bagh, S.R. Nagar, Banjara Hills Road No.10 & 13, Saifabad, Malakpet, Kaladera, Uppuguda, Patigadda and Madannapet.

Most of them were constructed four-five decades ago with lime and mortar and are very old. The plastering has peeled off and cost of maintenance is high and becoming difficult to maintain by the R & B Department, the release added.

Some quarters in Erramanzil Colony have been handed over to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.

Some are to be allotted to the Metro Rail Project at Erramanzil, Udyog Nagar and Malakpet Colonies. Following the handing over of the quarters, it has become essential to provide alternate accommodation to the affected staff working in the city.
