Irregularities in the appointment of research assistants exposed CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday has unearthed a major recruitment scam in the Tuberculosis Research Centre, a premier laboratory of the Indian Council of Medical Research, here. Two persons, including a retired official, were taken into custody. Sources in the agency said a team of the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch raided the TRC premises following specific inputs that irregularities were resorted to in the appointment of ‘Research Assistants’ in various projects over the years. Preliminary investigation revealed prima facie evidence indicating violation of rules and regulations in the recruitment process. Administrative Officer Adikesavan (58) and retired Section Officer Ramadoss (62) were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Investigators said they were looking into the role of a top scientist in the scam. “They have been violating rules in the recruitment of ‘Research Assistants’. In a few cases, question papers were leaked to benefit some candidates. The son of one of the suspects also got a job. We are investigating the extent of money involved in the fraudulent recruitments,” a CBI official said. The CBI had recently exposed a similar scam in the Pasteur Institute of India, Coonoor. The agency also raided the premises of the National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, following allegations of irregularities, the sources added. The TRC was set up at Chennai in 1956 by the ICMR, Government of Tamil Nadu, the World Health Organisation and the British Medical Research Council to undertake studies on the domiciliary application of chemotherapy in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.
