Rs.30.87 crore to improve infrastructure in schools in Perambalur, Ariyalur districts

Union Minister gives away laptops to SSLC public examination toppers at Kurumbalur



COMPUTER LITERACY: A. Raja, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, giving away a laptop to a student at Kurumbalur near Perambalur on Saturday.

PERAMBALUR: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs.30.87 crore for the construction of additional classrooms and laboratories in the district during the current academic year, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology A. Raja said.

Speaking at a function to mark the distribution of laptops to toppers in the SSLC public examination with Tamil as medium of instruction at a function held at Kurumbalur near here on Saturday, Mr. Raja said the funds would go towards improving facilities in 38 schools in Perambalur and Ariyalur districts. This was the eighth phase of the sanction of funds by NABARD.

In the seventh phase of the project implemented last year, 16 schools in these districts received aid to the tune of Rs.10.27 crore.

Encouraging students

The laptop scheme, he said, was aimed at encouraging students in rural areas to secure a higher percentage in the SSLC public examination with Tamil as medium of instruction.

Chief Educational Officer N. K. Rajarajan said 32 students, including 24 girls, received laptops.District Revenue Officer P. Sankar, Perambalur MLA M. Rajkumar and District Panchayat president Kodiyarasi Duraisamy spoke. The Union Minister earlier declared open additional classrooms at the Government Higher secondary school in Kurumbalur.

He also gave away financial assistance to the tune of Rs.18 lakh, sanctioned by the Social Welfare Department, to 112 persons.
