One-day home for girls opened

KOCHI: Inaugurating a one-day home for girls at Kakkanad, near Press Academy, the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, P.K. Sreemathy, said the government will be soon opening one-day homes at Kannur, Palakkad, Pathanamthita and Wayanad.

These homes will provide a secure place for girls travelling to far-off districts for interviews, examinations and other related needs. A bed and food for a day would cost Rs.50. Beds are available in dormitories as well as rooms; rooms would cost more. A person would be allowed to stay for a maximum of three days. A sum of Rs.45 lakh has been earmarked for social security schemes like comfort stations for women, the Minister said. Comfort stations will be built in association with the corporation or municipality as the local bodies will find a suitable place, she added.

At the function, K. Babu, MLA, presided. Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Usha Titus, welcomed the gathering. Panchayat president, Sabitha Kareem and member of the district panchayat, M.E. Hasainar, were among those who spoke. K.K. Mani, Director, Social Welfare, proposed a vote of thanks.
