Rashtrapati Bhavan to have a Rock Garden

Smriti Kak Ramachandran

The forecourt is being redesigned to enhance its aesthetic appeal

NEW DELHI: The Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt where all ceremonial receptions are held will no longer be a red expanse. The “bajri” (red sand) covered forecourt, which is the first stop for all visiting dignitaries, will soon be bordered with lush green grass.

The forecourt -- also the venue for the ceremonial Change of Guard, a traditional ceremony in which Infantry Army Guards and the President’s Bodyguard change guard with clock-work precision -- is being redesigned to enhance its aesthetic appeal. According to Rashtrapati Bhavan sources, the forecourt will have seven sections of “doob” grass along with trees for ornamental purposes. “The forecourt is where visiting dignitaries are accorded a formal welcome and other important ceremonies take place. It is for this reason that special attention is paid to this portion of the President’s house,” said an official.

The Rashtrpati Bhavan forecourt is laid with “bajri” of a specific size and volume keeping in mind its importance to the structure of the main building.

According to the officials, while the grass around the forecourt will add a new look to the majestic building, the red “bajri” will help retain the original design as was envisaged by its architects.

The President’s house will also have an additional feature in the form of a Rock Garden. “The garden will have varied rock formations and a variety of palm trees. The development of the Rock Garden will be carried out with Hardwar pebbles and a special type of grass,” said an official.

The President’s Estate, which is known for its magnificent Mughal Gardens, also boasts a Herbal Garden, a Nakshatra Gardenand a Palm Garden.
