PUDUCHERRY: The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in association with the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia is conducting the third regional consultation for “Community Radio Awareness (South Zone)” on July 1 and 2. According to a press release, the consultations were held to create awareness and motivate various educational institutions, agriculture institutions and civil society organisations to establish community radio station in their areas. Till date, more than 300 organisations had applied for licenses to set up community radio stations. Around 100 have been issued letters of intent and 37 were functioning across the country. The licenses are given free of cost by the government, the release added. Around 20 stations were situated in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. A live radio broadcast through CDMA phones which has been conceived, produced and presented by village women would be part of the consultative meet. Sessions on community radio in India, open house discussions, aspects of community radio, setting up a station, content and managing community radio and technology available would be held. The regional consultation would be inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College. Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University J.A.K. Tareen and officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting would participate.
