JAMUNMARATHUR: The State government will initiate all efforts to make Jamunamarathur in Tiruvannamalai district a popular tourist destination, Minister for Slum Development Suba Thangavelan said here on Sunday.

Participating in the valedictory of the 12th Summer Festival at Jamunamarathur in Jawadu Hills, the Minister said enough funds were available to create new tourist destinations and Jamunamarathur had all the potential to become an attractive tourist spot. The climatic condition was suitable for the tourists to stay here on weekends. The hill was at a height of 2,300 foot from the ground level.

Mr. Thangavelan said he would work on a master plan to make Jamunamarathur an attractive tourist destination. The master plan for tourism development would boost the income generation activity of the locals.

Tahsildar to be appointed

Stating that priority was given to address the issues faced by the hill tribes, Mr.Thangavelan said that a tahsildar will be appointed separately to address the grievances of the people of Jamunamarathur. They need not go to Tiruvannamalai or Polur to get their grievances addressed. Similarly, a tahsildar would be appointed separately to address the grievances of the people in Pudupalaym block adjoining Chengam.

He said that the tahsildar would be stationed at Jamunamarathur. People could directly hand over their petitions to the tahsildar.

Moreover, the Minister said that the Revenue Department was taking steps to issue community certificates to the people of Jamunamarathur without delay. During the period 2007-2008 a total of 1670 community certificates for the hill tribes were issued by the Revenue Department. Similarly, all steps were being taken to identify people above 65 years for the monthly financial assistance.

K.Tamarai, District Revenue Officer, said that based on instructions from Food Minister E.V.Velu it has been decided to increase the monthly quota of kerosene to Jamunamarathur from 3 to 10 litres.
