A colourful festival of French

Madhur Tankha

Show time: A still from ‘Three colours: red’ to be screened this coming Friday.

NEW DELHI: The French Embassy and Alliance Francaise de Delhi in association with World Movies are hosting a short film festival at 72 Lodhi Estate here beginning this Wednesday.

“An Extraordinary French Movie Festival” will feature three award-winning trilogies and a short film on love by the Oscar-nominated Polish film director and screenwriter, the late Krzysztof Kieslowski.

Kieslowski might have started his career shooting documentaries but later he became associated with “cinema of moral anxiety”. His early documentaries focused on the daily lives of city dwellers, workers, and soldiers. Though he was not an overtly political film-maker, he soon found that attempting to depict Polish life accurately brought him into conflict with the powers that be.

On Wednesday, “Three Colours: Blue” that revolves round the life of Julie will be screened. Wife of famous composer Patrice de Courcy, Julie’s life falls apart after her husband and daughter get killed in a car accident. Julie miraculously survives the automobile accident but after recovering from her injuries she wants to dissociate herself from all her past memories.

Kieslowski’s 1994 film “Three Colours: White” that like the previous one is a star-studded movie will be screened on Thursday.

The second of the “Three Colours” trilogy in which red, white and blue colours denote liberty, equality and fraternity, the film won the prestigious Silver Berlin Bear award for best direction at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film is about a Polish hairdresser working in France. He has a good-looking wife who is in the process of divorcing him for his inability to consummate the marriage.

On Friday, “Three Colours: Red” set in Geneva will be beamed. The film’s protagonist is a naïve university student and part-time model, Valentine. The film has been honoured with quite a few awards.

A romantic film, “A Short Film About Love”, that has only two main characters will be screened on Sunday. Young Tomek’s favourite pastime is to spy on his neighbour Magda through his binoculars. In her mid-30s, Magda is an artist. Things change when the two finally meet and discover that they share a lot more in common.
