C.D. Irene (left), Kodaganur S. Gopinath Bangalore: Two city doctors — C.D. Irene and Dr. Kodaganur S. Gopinath — have bagged the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award in recognition of their contribution to the field of advanced medicine. This award, instituted by the Medical Council of India, in memory of Dr. B.C. Roy, is considered the highest honour in the field of medicine in the country. While Dr. Irene has been recognised for her overall performance as a consultant in the field of pathology and as a specialist in haematology, Dr. Gopinath has been chosen in recognition of his contribution to the development of speciality oncology. Dr. Gopinath, who is the National President of the Association of Surgeons of India, will receive the award from President of India Pratibha Patil on Tuesday in New Delhi. Dr. Irene, who has worked as Consultant (Pathology) in the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) Polyclinic in Bangalore for the last 20 years, will get the award on July 20. Vast experienceDr. Gopinath has over 30 years of experience and specialises in surgical oncology. He is a medical graduate from J.J.M. Medical College, Davangere. He did his postgraduate studies in surgery from G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai, and also obtained FRCSED from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. After heading the Department of Surgical Oncology at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, he moved on to establish the Bangalore Institute of Oncology in 1990. He was also the National President of the Indian Association of Surgical Oncologists for the period of 2003-2004 and currently is National President of Osmates India, a voluntary organisation. Dr. Gopinath has received many prestigious awards such as the Rajyotsava Award 2005 from the Government of Karnataka and the Vikas Rathna Award from the International Friendship Society, New Delhi. He also received the Mammadi Saudaver travelling fellowship in Oncology in 1987. Significant contributionHe has made a significant contribution to research in the area of Oncology, which includes head and neck surgery, conventional open versus laparoscopic surgery, for cancer in the rectum. He has also done research work on yoga and breast cancer. Dr. Gopinath is known for his education and community initiatives and has been awarded the Best Citizen Award 2002 by the Lions Club of Peenya. SpecialisationDr. Irene, from Thrissur district of Kerala, is a medical graduate from Trivandrum Medical College. She did her postgraduate studies in pathology from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, specialising in haematology. A recipient of the Fellowship Diploma Award instituted by the International Society of Haematology in 1983, Dr. Irene also worked as Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar. In the early years of her career, she worked at the Bangalore Medical College and at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, after which she joined the CGHS polyclinic. Post-retirement, she now does voluntary work. Both the doctors said the award was a great honour to them.
