VILLUPURAM: Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister K.R.Periakaruppan along with District Collector R.Periasamy visited Sri Angala Parameswari Amman Temple at Melmalaiyanur near Ginjee on Sunday to oversee the safety arrangements being made there. On the last New Moon day, — June 3,2008 — six devotees, standing in the queue in a temporary shed on the temple premises were electrocuted and scores of others suffered electric shock. The government subsequently gave a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 5,000 to the injured. After going around the temple, Mr. Periakaruppan told reporters that since the next New Moon Day fell on July 2, when large number of devotees used to visit the temple, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi had instructed him to ensure that all safety measures were put in place in the temple to avert any such mishap. He further said the Collector would convene a consultative committee meeting periodically to take stock of the situation. As a temporary measures proper safeguards had been incorporated in the sheds for devotees and the electric fittings were duly checked. The police and fire service personnel would be available ready at hand. Mr. Periakaruppan gave an assurance that full-fledged safety arrangements would be made in the temple and its surroundings on a war-footing. District Revenue Officer C.Kadhiravan, Superintendent of Police A.Amalraj, Kannan, Ginjee MLA, Special Commissioner (HR & CE) Pichandi, Joint Commissioner Thirumagal, and Assistant Commissioner Selvaraj accompanied the Minister.
