It was approximately five years ago that the view on diabetes began to broaden widely, especially for Type-2 diabetes. Epidemiological data highlighted the dramatic increase in Type-2 diabetes world wide. Genetic susceptibility and environmental factors lead to gradual loss of insulin sensitivity. As a consequence, pre-diabetic conditions mainly IGT can be detected. Today, India has the dubious distinction of being the country with the largest number of people with diabetes. Recent studies have made the picture even grimmer by the fact that many are still undiagnosed. . The world population of people with diabetes in 2002 was estimated to be between 170 and 200 million with two thirds living in developing countries. It is now widely accepted that if detected early and adequate steps are taken, it may be possible to significantly delay the onset and progression of complications related to diabetes. Thus it’s necessary to diagnose the onset of diabetes at the earliest. Although diabetes does have its typical signs and symptoms, many people do not exhibit these ‘typical’ signs and symptoms even though they have diabetes. Of late, the incidence of Type-2 diabetes in children and adolescents has increased dramatically. Testing should be performed in over weight children. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic incurable diseases and is particularly unusual in that it is associated with the development of severe chronic complications, notably retinal and renal disease, as well as atherosclerotic vascular disease. Type 2 Diabetes is the more common form of diabetes comprising around 70-90% of cases and is a heterogeneous one resulting from a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors.
