Eyes are a wonderful sense organ of human beings and to become blind is a tragedy. Here are a few tips to take care of your eyes and to enjoy clear eye sight for life. During infancy and childhood, proper eye care and its well being is very important. In infancy the commonest eye problem we encounter is watering and discharge from the eyes. For this an immediate consultation of an eye surgeon is a must. Any birth defects like smallness of eyes, drooping of the eye lids, any white opacity of cornea eye lid defects or squint should be shown to the eye doctor because time intervention is a must. Congenital cataract is also encountered in childhood which should be handed urgently. During childhood long and short sightedness should be corrected by using prescribed spectacles. Those who want to avoid spectacles can undergo surgery to correct refractive error. Never should a child’s eye examined in an optical shop and spectacle used across the counter. Children while playing could injure the eyes and dust particles could enter the eyes. Even a trivial eye injury should be thoroughly tested by an eye doctor. Avoid children playing with sharp objects. People using computer and laptops should seek proper advice. Sit in a proper position, don’t look at the computer for continuously for hours and do a proper natural blinking of your eyes at least 15 to 20 per minutes. Computer users often tend to develop dry eyes. Under such condition one can use lubricating eye drops. Adults and elderly should have eye check up once in a year. Diabetic and hypertensive patients should have a detailed retinal examination. A thorough control of blood sugar and blood pressure is mandatory. The elderly might also develop A.R.M.D (Age Related Muscular Degeneration) which is to be diagnosed early and timely treatment either by laser or surgery should be performed. Dr. K.S.
