News Analysis
* * A very large number of readers have pointed out that the report “Stirring send-off to ‘Sam Bahadur’” (June 28, 2008, page 1) erred in saying he was the second Indian to be made Field Marshal. He was the first Indian to be so decorated. The Hindu, January 1, 1973 said: Gen. S.H.F.J. Manekshaw, MC, has been promoted to the rank of Field Marshal of the Indian Army ... Gen. Manekshaw, who took over as Army Chief on June 6, 1969, was due to have retired on April 3 last on completion of 58 years of age. He was, however, asked to continue in office ‘at the pleasure of the President’. He will lay down his office as Army Chief soon after he assumes the rank of Field Marshal. The Hindu, January 16, 1986, said: The first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Gen. K.M. Cariappa has been made Field Marshal for life with effect from January 15, 1986. * * The third paragraph in a report “Even while battling for life, he [Manekshaw] was a companion to patients” (June 28, 2008) was, “Said his other daughter, Shelly Batliwala: ‘The army was his ’life.’” She is Sherry Batliwala. * * Lt. Gen. J.F.R. Jacob was Chief of Staff of the Eastern Command, and not its chief (“How he and his men won those wars,” June 28, 2008) during the 1971 war. The GoC-in-C, Eastern Command was Lt. Gen. J.S. Arora.
* * In the Editorial, “Sense prevails in Kashmir” (June 30, 2008), a sentence was “Jammu and Kashmir’s new Governor, N.N. Vohra, who also heads the Shrine Board, deserves credit for his behind-the-scenes role in facilitating the dialogue that enabled the principles to arrive at a negotiated settlement.” It should have been “principals”. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
