The community is worst hit among artisans after globalisation KURNOOL: MG Charities, supported by members of MG Brothers group of companies, has opened an English medium school for children of weaver community at Yemmiganur in Kurnool district. The sponsors have proposed to set up a high school from nursery to 10th classes offering free education and food. The school offers breakfast, lunch and snacks in the evening besides providing books free. MG Charities has come forward to donate Rs. 10 lakh every year for the school. Initially, 93 students were admitted to LKG, UKG and class I. The classes will be increased progressively. The organisers also have plans to establish a junior college . Srinivasulu, president of Kurni Community Welfare Association, said on Monday that weavers were the worst hit among artisans after globalisation. Many families were unable to feed themselves as they did not know any other work. The only alternative for the community was to diversify into other professions by educating the children. Mr. Srinivasulu thanked M.R. Gangganna, M.R. Ramesh and M.R. Gangadhar for taking the initiative. Anniversary feteMeanwhile, the residents of Yemmiganur will celebrate the 104th birth anniversary of Machani Somappa, who is considered the father of weavers’ movement in Kurnool district and State as well. He had launched a strong cooperative movement by forming weavers societies and a spinning mill.
