New railway timetable comes into effect today

It will have details of the 77 new trains introduced this year

NEW DELHI: The new user-friendly timetable of the Indian Railways giving details about trains and other facilities being provided to its passengers will come into effect from Tuesday (July 1). It will have all the details of 77 new trains being introduced by various zonal railways this year, besides containing information about the reduced travel time of over 250 trains and other facilities being provided to passengers.

The “Trains at a Glance and Public Timetables” being published by all the zonal railways separately will contain details about new trains being introduced and extensions to some existing ones as announced in the Railway Budget 2008-2009. A total of 77 pairs of new trains will be introduced this year, while 18 pair of trains will get extensions and frequency of 15 pairs increased. The new trains being introduced include Howrah-Puri Garib Rath Express (bi-weekly), Kanpur-Jammu Tawi Express (weekly), Azamgarh-Mumbai Express (weekly), Bapudham Motihari-Anand Vihar Garib Rath Express (weekly)and Amravati-Nagpur Express (bi-weekly).

Similarly, with the implementation of the new timetable, 242 mail and express trains are being speeded up, which include nine Rajdhani Express, four Shatabdi Express and one Garib Rath Express services, while three pairs of trains — Yesvantpur-Korba Express, Pune-Darbhanga Express and Sonpur-Jammu Tawi Mourdhwaj Express — are being converted into superfast services.

The new timetable now comes with several new features that include how to read a table, route map, station index, trains between important stations, station code index, train number index, and train name index.

It also contains colour coding of scheme for trains — pink for Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Jan Shatabdi Express and Garib Rath Express; yellow for other superfast trains; and blue or white for other mail or express trains. It also has a special supplement on tourism covering important tourism sites of the nation.

Commercial information of passengers’ use and interest like advance reservation period, reservation through Internet, refund rules, rail travel concessions and fare chart besides information regarding vigilance organisation, public grievance machinery and catering services have also been incorporated in the new timetable.
