Three apex tribal research institutes to be set up

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Tribal Affairs Ministry has decided to set up three apex tribal research institutes for undertaking research on ground and to suggest application-oriented projects for tribal development.

The institutes, to be set up in Orissa, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, will also suggest action plans for the promotion of culture and language of tribal communities, conduct research and evaluation studies.

Briefing members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry here on Monday, Union Tribal Affairs Minister P.R. Kyndiah said his Ministry was actively considering full Central government funding for setting up the institutes.

Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Rameshwar Oroan stressed the need for strengthening existing tribal research institutes and said these institutes should study tribal issues closely and suggest effective measures for inclusion in government programmes and policies. He said libraries at these centres needed to be strengthened.
