School notes

Free notebooks distributed

Free uniforms, notebooks and slates were distributed to the poor students of Sri Balaganapathy Vidhyasala Primary School, Tiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur district, at a function held on the school premises recently.

The Chairman of the Village Education Committee, Atralalagan, presided over the function and the Assistant Elementary Education Officer, G. Lakshminarayanan, was the chief guest.

P. Bhuvaneswari Balaji and Rama Raveendran donated the uniforms, the founder of the K.R.K. Kumarappa Trust K. Murugappa and S. Murugesan, an alumnus, sponsored the notebooks and slates respectively.

Students bring laurels

Four students, including two girls, of Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, brought laurels to the school by winning three golds and one bronze at the recently held State-level silambam competitions at Vellore.

S. P. Sathyaprabakaran won the gold medal in the 46-50 kg category, his sister S. P. Akila won the bronze in the girls in 42-46 kg category. The other gold medal winners were B. Karikalacholan in the boys 42-46 kg category and M. Priyadharshini in the girls under 10 years category.

The winners who also received citations and cash awards will next compete in the nationals to be held in Chennai shortly. The Senior Principal of the school, Jonathan Jayabarathan, and the coach M. Balasubramanian commended the performance of the youngsters.

Toppers’ efforts commended

A Village Education Committee meeting was held at Government High School, Maruthanthalai, Pudukottai district.

The committee president S. Malayappan chaired the meeting. Vice-president of the committee Marimuthu and John Kennedy, a philanthropist, commended the efforts of the school toppers in the recent tenth examinations.

Headmaster A. Soosai spoke on the key role played by the teachers in the success of the students. Prizes were distributed to the toppers.

Enrolment rally taken out

A students’ enrolment rally was conducted by the Government Upper Primary School, Pudukottai, recently.

Headmaster C. Muthukaruppan led the rally. School teachers Gunaseelan, Vasuki, J. Pauline and Jayarani took part. Municipal vice-chairman Naina Mohammed flagged off the rally from school campus. Councillor M. Karnan and the Superintendent, Sarva Siks ha Abhiyan, V. Tamilarasu spoke. A large number of students took part in the rally.

Education grant

The Government’s education grant for the school students belonging to Adi Dravidar, Backward Classes and Most Backward communities will be disbursed on August 15 in the Government and Government-aided schools in Nagapattinam district, according to M. Jayaraman, Collector. The Collector appealed to all eligible candidates to apply for the education assistance without delay.

Awareness created

Thousands of students from several schools took out rallies in Mayiladuturai and Nagapattinam towns and observed international anti-drugs day on June 26 to create awareness among people about the ill-effects of use of drugs. They carried placards against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The students took pledge against use of drugs.
