Red Ribbon Express to reach Alappuzha today

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The Red Ribbon Express, a joint initiative of the National AIDS Control Organization and the Indian Railways to create awareness on HIV/AIDS, will reach Alappuzha for a two-day campaign on Tuesday.

District Collector V. K. Balakrishnan, addressing a press conference here on Monday, said Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi would inaugurate the two-day programme at 10 a.m. at the Alappuzha Railway Station.

A wide-ranging action plan to conduct different types of awareness campaigns in the district had been drawn out, Mr. Balakrishnan said, informing that a district-level organizing committee had been constituted for the purpose.

Volunteers from the train, which is here as part of its journey to cover 180 main railway stations and spread the anti-AIDS message in 43,200 villages in one year, will set out in two teams on cycles with their programmes and pamphlets to places near the railway station, while two other teams would tour the countryside on buses.

Considering Alappuzha’s geographical conditions, two teams would also travel on boats through the Kuttanad region for the awareness campaign, the District Collector said.

District Medical Officer V. Divakaran was present at the press conference.
