ALAPPUZHA: Coir Minister G. Sudhakaran has requested Union Minister of State for Industries Ashwani Kumar for the Union government’s help to restructure and rejuvenate the coir sector in the State. Mr. Sudhakaran, who submitted a memorandum in this regard to Mr. Kumar during the latter’s visit to the district on Sunday, pointed out that the time had passed for the revamping the coir sector, from which more than four lakh people earned their livelihoods in Kerala. Modernisation and product diversification had become essential, he said, requesting help for strengthening the domestic market and for creating a brand image for coir products from the State. The withdrawal of the rebate for coir products in 2000 had put coir public sector units and cooperative societies in crisis, he said, requesting the Minister to initiate steps to restore the rebate.
