Chitradurga: The Chitradurga City Municipal Council (CMC) approved several major proposals in the special meeting convened here on Monday. Taking into consideration the inadequate sanitation facilities in the city, the CMC approved the purchase of land for setting up a water treatment plant outside the city. ProblemReading out the proposal, CMC manager Nisar Ahmed said owing to an increase in population and inadequacy of the old drainage system, the city was facing a sanitation problem. “To resolve this problem, the CMC requires about 25 acres of land outside the city where the filthy water can be stored. This water can be reused by setting up a treatment plant, for which the CMC needs 20 acres of land,” he said. The meeting also approved the proposal to increase the water cess after Mr. Ahmed said that the present rates could not meet the expenditure of the CMC. The decision on the exact increase will be taken later. Approval was given to the installation of water meters in the city. SelectedMr. Ahmed said that the CMC had been selected to implement projects under the Karnataka Municipal Reforms Programme for providing better roads and sanitation facilities. During the meeting, Congress members staged a walkout protesting against details of the Karnataka Municipal Reforms Programme being provided in English instead of Kannada. CMC commissioner S.B. Mudhol said that since the CMC had to submit the details to the Union Government, it had prepared the documents in English.
