It was reported in the media that the Devipattinam Police arrested a lorry driver and a cleaner on June 20 and seized 240 bags of PDS Rice that was being smuggled from Panaikulam in Ramanathapuram taluk. This might have been diverted by the salesman of the fair price shops situated between Athankarai and Chittarkottai. The incident clearly showed that the civil supplies staff have not inspected those shops. Stern action should be taken against the salesmen and those who indulged in smuggling the commodity. The civil supplies staff should also be taken to task for dereliction of duty. G. Nagasamy, Ramanathapuram. Separate maternity ward neededIn Paramakudi Government Hospital there is no separate maternity ward. Previously it was functioning in an old building separately. Now it is in a dilapidated state functioning with the paediatric ward in an unhygienic condition. The population of Paramakudi taluk is nearly 3 lakh out of which 1.5 lakh people are women. The poor downtrodden will approach only the government hospital for delivery. Will the authorities construct a separate maternity ward with 100 beds in an effort to provide good facility to the poor. V. Rajendran, Paramakudi. Remove stones on roadsThe roads in Sivaganga were dug up to lay the underground drainage pipes. After these were laid, the trenches were filled with loose earth in a haphazard way. The result was the middle of the road became shallow and the road got degraded into a narrow pathway. The saddest aspect is the stones used earlier for gravelling the roads now lie scattered all over. It is said for a year or two, the people have to bear with the road conditions, for it may take that long for all the underground drainage pipes to be laid and domestic sewage links to be sanctioned, thus providing the correct and convenient background for relaying new roads. Till such thing happens, the least the authorities can do is to clear all the stones that dot on roads and lie half-hidden, so that the roads are safe to use. G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga. IT park in backward districtsThe Government is keen in establishing Information Technology parks to promote this sector as a step to get more foreign exchange. But sites chosen for the parks are in big cities only. Instead of accumulating industries in metropolitan cities thus paving way for congestion, such parks can be opened at urban areas in backward districts. One Information Technology park should be opened in Ramanthapuram district. A private Trust of Kilakarai has come forward to donate 100 acres. Such offer from a voluntary organisation should be availed of and the State Government should come forward to put up the superstructure at the offered site and provide all facilities needed for a most modern IT Park. Asmabagh Anvardeen, Ramanthapuram.
