Farmers block highway for fertilizer

MYSORE: Scores of farmers blocked the Mysore-Mangalore Road at Hunsur on Monday to protest against the scarcity of fertilizers, which had prevented them from continuing agricultural activities.

The farmers assembled on the highway from 9 a.m. and blocked vehicles from both sides. The agitators did not allow even diversion of vehicles. Deputy Commissioner P. Manivannan rushed to the spot and assured the farmers that arrangements had been made for distribution of fertilizers, was expected to arrive from Mangalore.

The authorities said Hunsur region required approximately 45 tonnes of fertilizer, and so far around 20 tonnes had been distributed.

Farmers told the authorities not test their patience. Following the assurance by the district administration, the farmers dispersed.
