NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved five per cent reservation for the Other Backward Classes in admissions to educational institutions under the State Government. The reservation would be applicable in all diploma, under-graduate, graduate and post-graduate level courses in both technical and higher educational institutions. After the meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the present quota of reservation for the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes would remain unchanged due to the grant of five per cent reservation to the OBCs in admissions from this academic session. She said the Delhi Government would enhance the number of seats by 10 per cent so that the overall opportunities available to general category candidates do not get diminished. It was also stated that the reservation of 27 per cent for the OBCs would begin from the 2008-09 academic year and would be implemented in phases and the 27 per cent level would be attained in five years by 2012-13. To ensure that general category candidates do not get discriminated against, an increase in the total number of seats by 54 per cent would also be effected. Ms. Dikshit said the Delhi Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission Bill), 2008, would be introduced in the Legislative Assembly for providing this reservation. She expressed confidence that this would go a long way in providing reasonable opportunities for technical and higher education to the OBCs in Delhi.
