Chandrashekar to remain in active politics
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: Legislative Council Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar, who retired as Chairman on Monday, has decided to remain in active politics.
Addressing presspersons here, Prof. Chandrashekar said that he was planning to contest the Lok Sabha elections. Several leaders from the city had advised him to contest the last Assembly elections, and even though the Congress had given him the ticket, he had declined to contest, he said. Prof. Chandrashekar, who was Chairman for 14 months, took initiatives to conduct seminars and programmes on various development subjects during the President’s Rule in the State. The centenary celebrations of the Council was organised under his stewardship.
“The office of the Chairman provided me an opportunity and I am satisfied,” he said and thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Prof. Chandrashekar said that he strove to maintain the prestige and dignity of the House.
Unlike the Council, the Rajya Sabha had special powers. He conducted the session of the Upper House fairly and allowed all members to speak.
Prof. Chandrashekar joined the Congress after being with the erstwhile Janata Dal for over a decade.
He was Minister for Primary and Secondary Education in the S.M. Krishna Government.
