Card platform tickets the best

It is a nightmare to buy platform tickets at Tiruchi Junction because of clubbing of counters for issuing unreserved and platform tickets (“Need for more facilities at Junction”, The Hindu June 26). Railways can go back to the old method of issuing card type platform tickets _ by far the fastest method _ in case vending machines are out of order. Like in Chennai, more unreserved ticket counters can be opened at prominent locations in the city to avoid rush at the Junction. Franchising of vending machines would go a long way in improving the availability of tickets if the Railways want to live up to the Railway Minister’s idea of ‘no queue’ at counters.

Train for Delhi needed

After the completion of broad guage conversion between Tiruchi and Chennai, the Tiruchi Junction is presently rail-linked to all the cities or towns in north India. However, the demand for the introduction of a train service between New Delhi and Tiruchi is pending. The Railways can introduce a superfast train for New Delhi via Erode, Salem, Katpadi, Vijayawada and Bhopal, named as Tiruchi-New Delhi Cauvery Express. It can have 3-tier and 2-tier coaches in second class and First A/C and Second A/C compartments.

Shift sub-jail to ease traffic

Gandhi Market in Tiruchi is a commercial hub with a heavy flow of traffic and activities throughout day and night. The sub-jail can be shifted to the outskirts. The space liberated can be profitably utilised for raising a commercial complex, car parking, etc. The row of small shops _ dealing in jaggery, chilly, jute bags etc. _ on the southern side of the main road is causing a lot of hindrance to the traffic. These shops can be shifted inside the sub-jail compound.

Weekly holiday

I request the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider the Sunday weekly holiday for ration shops. Working people and merchant community will be at home. It will be very easy for people to go to fair price shops. Any other week day can be declared as a holiday.

Hospital upgrade

This refers to the reporter’s dairy item (The Hindu, June 30) on the Mayor’s plea to the Chief Minister to upgrade the Government Hospital on par with the AIIMS, New Delhi. We appreciate her bold move in the larger interest of the public. Transport Minister K. N. Nehru rightly raised this demand before the Union Health Minister at a function at Chennai. The proposal was shifted to Salem only for political reasons, as stated by Mayor. An expert team visited the Annal Gandhi Government Hospital and submitted a favourable report regarding the land. Based on the report, the then State Health Minister declared that this hospital would upgrade either by Central or State funding. I request both the Centre and the State to come out with a concrete proposal for upgrading the Tiruchi Hospital before the next Lok Sabha elections.
