Education for all: Students of Sri Savithri Kanya Unnatha Patashala greet Backward Classes Welfare Minister M. Mukesh Goud, Minister for School Education Damodar Rajanarasimha, who inaugurated new school building in Hyderabad on Monday.

HYDERABAD: It was a memorable day for the students of Sri Savithri Kanya Unnatha Patashala at Maharajgunj on Monday as their dream for a new school building came true. The building constructed at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh was inaugurated by BC Welfare Minister M. Mukesh Goud.

Established in 1942, the school was known for quality education till recently. But lack of amenities and fewer teachers have led to children dropping out of it.

The students’ strength which was 10 in 1942, gradually increased to over 800 in the 80’s. Such was the quality of education; the school even registered 100 per cent SSC pass percentage for three consecutive years since 2004, said Wholesale Grain Merchants Education Committee (WGMEC) General Secretary, Dhaduy Narsing Rao.

The school is run by the committee in collaboration with the government. Dilapidated building, lack of classrooms and absence of teachers resulted in school dropouts, bringing down the student strength to 230 this academic year.

Of the 12 teachers, five retired and there was no recruitment since 10 years, informed Mr. Rao.

Worried over declining standards, the committee under MPLADS funds constructed the new school building with 10 classrooms.

However, the school still lacks science lab, library, principal and staff rooms and a playground for students.

Minister for School Education, Damodar Rajanarsimha, announced that teachers in aided schools would be recruited shortly.
