’A good breakfast for a good day at school’

VIJAYAWADA: It was a delicious session unfolding the magic that a scrumptious meal can mean to a student’s life.

The launch of the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme of The Hindu in the seventh class of Akshara International School at Ashok Nagar on Monday in the fresh academic year was perfectly in sync with the topic of the day, ‘A good breakfast for a good day.”

“Eat right for a perfect day ahead,” the resource person urged the children who were asked to list out the items they had eaten for breakfast in the last three days.

Many whacked their heads, while the smarter ones were quick to jot down the list of yummies mom had fed them with love and care.

That breakfast is an important meal of the day is a common knowledge, but not many in the classroom knew that there was a direct link between breakfast and their cognitive abilities and academic performance.

Triggers competition

It was interesting to watch the resource person lead the classroom through a meandering row of tip-offs that eventually helped them land into the world of food, nutritious food to be precise. “How do you start your day?”, this simple question triggered a fierce race among girls and boys to share their experiences. “By praying”, “reading a newspaper”, “working out” and ‘morning walk” were some of the answers.

To take them closer to the topic, the teacher gave them the day’s newspaper and asked them to find food-related photographs and articles.

In an attempt to test if it had rung the bell, the teacher asked the children to recollect what was served on the breakfast table in the morning.

“Healthy and nutritious food is very important for maintaining good health. Health involves, regular and timely food comprising juices, nuts, snacks and much more. A balanced diet and good food habits are essential for a healthy life,” she maintained.

Breakfast-skippers could risk weakness resulting in the slowdown of their brainpower, she warned. Since the first meal of the day is eaten to break the nocturnal fast, it does a world of good to children in terms of enhancing their energy and vigour, she added.
