Sri Lanka seeks support for its coir sector

KOCHI: A delegation from Sri Lanka, headed by Dr. Padma Ratnayake, Executive Director of South Asia Partnership visited Coir Board recently and held discussions with senior officials on various issues related developing the coir industry in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Ratnayake headed a 12-member team comprising Premathilake Jayakody, Secretary for Deputy High Commissioner, Sri Lanka among others. They visited the Central Coir Research Institute, Kalavoor in Alappuzha and coir-producing centres in the district.

She said the South Asian Partnership worked with marginalised communities in 12 districts in Sri Lanka.

The focus of its work was on community empowerment, participation of women in governance, small and medium entrepreneurship development, resettlement of internally displaced persons, women and child protection advocacy action and strengthening the capacity of local government institutions.
