Ugly spots in citadel of democracy
M. Raghuram
BANGALORE: “Cleanliness is next to godliness” — the popular saying goes. What better place to practice cleanliness than in the Vidhana Soudha, the citadel of democracy that flaunts the motto, “Government’s work is God’s work”?
And yet, a discerning visitor to the Vidhana Soudha will note that the interiors of its stately buildings need the immediate attention of the housekeeping department, if indeed there is such a department that is in charge of cleanliness.
Broken and dusty furniture have been dumped along the corridor and in one of the splendid balconies on the northern side of the Vidhana Soudha.
“They have been lying there for long and nobody knows who dumps the broken furniture there,” says one of the clerks in the nearby office. The Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, A. Shashidhar, told The Hindu that after he took charge, he had cleared several truck loads of unwanted things that were lying around.
