Krishnagiri: The State Government has invited applications from minority students studying in Standards I to X for the pre-matric education scholarships for 2008-09. According to a release, about 15,340 minority students in Tamil Nadu would be given the scholarships in the current year. This includes 7,320 Muslim students, 7980 Christians, 20 Sikhs and 20 Buddhist students. Students of Standards VI to X are eligible to get the actual admission fee paid or Rs. 500 a year and actual educational fee or a maximum of Rs. 350 a month under the scholarship programme. Besides, a maintenance allowance of Rs. 100 a month would be given for day scholars studying in Standards I to X. For hostellers studying in Standards VI to X, the maintenance grant would be Rs. 600 a month for 10 months. Students applying under the scheme should have secured a minimum of 50 per cent marks in the previous final examination. The annual income of their parents/guardians should be less than Rs. 1 lakh. The application form and other details of the scholarship is available at www.minorityaffairs.gov. in. The applications should be submitted to the headmasters or the principals of the schools and colleges. The heads of the institutions should verify the same and forward them to the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Officer before July 15, the release added.
