Udhagamandalam: The agitation by an AIADMK member of the Udhagamandalam Municipal Council which began on Monday morning came to end on Tuesday afternoon.

While participating in a meeting of the Council on Monday, the member A.Imtiaz had alleged that unauthorised constructions were coming up in ward number 22. Claiming that they were being put up by persons close to a Tamil Nadu Minister on his behalf, he said that building rules in the area were not being adhered to.

Demanding an explanation and protesting against the violation, he had gone on a sit-in strike inside the meeting hall. With the member refusing to leave, the municipality had lodged a complaint with the police late in the night against him and some AIADMK supporters including the Secretary of the Advocates Wing T.K.Devaraj.

Mr.Imtiaz converted his sit-in strike into a hunger strike on Tuesday. The matter was taken up with the headquarters of the AIADMK by district secretary Adar Selvaraj. With the party deciding to seek judicial intervention if action was not taken against the unauthorised constructions, Mr.Imtiaz called off his demonstration.

He said that the party would stage a series of demonstrations if his demands were not met. The proliferation of unauthorised constructions was playing havoc with the environment of this ecologically sensitive hill station, he said.
