BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday granted bail to M.G. Hiremath, Director (now suspended) of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli. Dr. Hiremath had moved the High Court for bail after a Dharwad court had rejected his plea for release from custody. He said he was arrested by the Vidyanagar police in Hubli after some persons on December 10, 2007 shot Shivanand Doddamani, a doctor in KIMS. In his criminal petition, Dr. Hiremath said the police had erroneously included him name in the list of suspects and arrayed him as accused no 3 in the case. He said he was the Director of KIMS when Dr. Doddamani was shot. He said he is the chairperson of a committee of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Mumbai and also honorary secretary of the Karnataka State Obstetric and Gynaecological Association. He said Chandrarani, wife of Dr. Doddamani, lodged a complaint with the police that some persons who had come to their house and asked for her husband had shot him. She said she had rushed her husband to hospital and subsequently lodged a complaint. Dr. Hiremath said he is wrongly accused in the shooting. The police claimed that he was against Dr. Doddamani taking over as the Superintendent of KIMS. Moreover, Dr. Doddamani had come in his way of passing certain bills. Dr. Hiremath contested both these allegations and said they were untrue. Justice H.V.G. Ramesh allowed the criminal petition and granted bail to Dr. Hiremath. Two accused in the case, Bangaresh and Vijaya Rajashekarappa Kulkarni, have also been granted bail.
