Rebuilding lives for the underprivileged
Activist Prince Singhal has launched a programme to support underprivileged victims who suffer at the hands of rich drunken drivers. The activist has raised Rs.50,000 for the family of an ice-cream vendor, Amar, who lost his life near India Gate this past December after he was knocked down by a car driver who was drunk. The sole breadwinner of his family, the young man was pushing
the ice-cream cart towards India Gate when the speeding car crushed him.
With five mouths to feed -- old parents, two younger sisters who can not afford schooling, and a younger brother -- Amar’s family is trying hard to come to terms with his loss.
“A young life was lost because someone was driving home after a New Year’s party with friends after consuming alcohol,” said Prince Singhal, who started the non-profit organisation “Community against Drunken Driving”.
According to him, most victims and their families who are hit by drunken driving accidents survive only on hope as “the law does not ensure any compensation for them either from the Government or from the offender leaving them with very little options”.
“It is for these underprivileged victims like Amar that I have initiated the victim support programme to help them re-build their lives,” he adds.
