In all 5,510 applications in the four municipalities in Vizianagaram district were received and the government had so far identified about 250 acres of government land against the requirement of 503 acres and execution of houses had not yet begun. The land cost during the last one year had doubled and it might go up further if the proposed coastal corridor became a reality, he said and added that the government offer of 25 per cent concession on market cost would be of no use as cost of cement, iron and other construction materials soared high. Moreover, the government had in 2004 assured house-sites to registered Employees’ house building societies. There are 31 societies registered in the district but they have not received house-sites. Even before the employees lost confidence in the government it should begin construction of houses, he said. With regard to deputation of teachers under GO 610, Mr. Sarma demanded that they be absorbed in regular vacancies, as they had already completed one year of service in the district. He also demanded 20 per cent HRA for employees in Vizianagaram town.
