BAPATLA: Traffic on the busy Guntur Bapatla Chirala (GBC) Road was held up from Tuesday morning as irate villagers belonging to Chndurupalli blocked the road after two farmers were killed in a road accident. People of the village, who gathered in large numbers, squatted on the road between Bapatla and Ponnur seeking immediate action against the driver and payment of compensation to the victims. Police teams led by Bapatla Inspector M. Joseph Raj Kumar reached the place and were trying to persuade the farmers to end the agitation. Two farmers – M. Ananda Rao (55) and Jasti Rambabu (50) – who returning after farm work were hit by a tractor carrying sand and proceeding towards Ponnur at about 8.30 a.m. They sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot. The tractor driver fled the scene leaving the vehicle behind. Villagers, after a futile attempt to nab the driver, gathered on the main road and staged a rasta roko. They even thrashed another person who was on the tractor when the accident took place. They squatted on the road leading to disruption of traffic. Vehicles were stranded up to 2 km on either sides of the village.
