Corrections and clarifications

* * In a report “PDP pulls out of J&K government” (June 29, 2008, page 1), the first paragraph was “The government has been reduced to a minority … This will take the Congress’ tally to 41, still 4 short of a majority”, while the third paragraph in another report “I have the required numbers, claims Ghulam Nabi Azad” (June 30, 2008) was “Asked by reporters about the fate of his government he said, ‘there is no threat to the government and it will complete its full term.’ He did not explain how he would manage the magic figure of 44.” The Government needs 44 members to survive.

* * The heading (and text) of an item was “India-born millionaire [Varsha Sabhnani] sentenced for slavery” (“Snapshots”, June 28, 2008, page 1). Mrs Sabhnani, an Indonesian-born Indian, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison in the United States for enslaving and torturing her two Indonesian housekeepers.

* * The heading of an item was “Nano to roll out by October” (“Briefly”, Some editions, June 21, 2008, page 1). It should have been “to roll out in October” as mentioned in the text, and an inside report “Tata to hold Nano price at Rs. 1 lakh” (“Business” page, June 21, 2008).

* * The first paragraph in a Ted Corbett report “Unspectacular batting by England” (“Sport”, June 26, 2008) was “It is almost impossible to believe that England, winner of the first one-day international against New Zealand by 114 runs, has played so feebly since that they would have lost the second game but for rain, was defeated by 22 runs in the second and at the Oval on Wednesday was bowled out for 245 on a bright, white batsman’s heaven of a pitch without even batting through the full 50 overs.” It was the third ODI, which England lost by 22 runs, and not the second as published.
