843 children not attending school

SIRSI: As many as 843 children, including 560 school dropouts, are not sent to school by their parents in Uttara Kannada district this year, according to sources in the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), Karwar, on Tuesday.

The highest number of such children is 118 in Sirsi taluk and the and lowest is 17 in Kumta taluk.

The status in other taluks is: in Joida - 117 children, Haliyal - 62, Mundgod - 62, Bhatkal - 49, Honnavar - 39, Karwar - 31, Ankola - 27 and Yellapur – 19 children.

NGOs chosen

The DPI will take the help of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the district to bring these children to school. Some 13 NGOs have been chosen for the purpose, according to the sources.
