THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The proposed Central university in the State would be set up in the erstwhile Malabar region, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told the Assembly on Tuesday. Replying to a submission by K.T. Jaleel (Independent), the Chief Minister said there was no neglect of Malabar and that various projects were under way in the region. More courses had been sanctioned in higher secondary schools in the region and steps were on to expand the activities of the Malabar Cancer Centre, he said. Wages: Labour Minister P. K. Gurudasan told C. Ravindranath (CPI(M) that an understanding had been reached on raising the wages of rubber tappers and that the enhanced rates would be announced after the meeting of the Plantation Labour Committee on June 5. The committee would also discuss the demand for raising the wages of workers in the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations, he said. Roads: Public Works Minister Mons Joseph told V. Sivan Kutty (CPI-M) that the work forming part of the Capital Development Project would resume soon. All the paper work relating to resumption of the work had been completed, 90 per cent of the land needed for road development acquired and steps had been taken to remove transformers and electric poles blocking the widening work, the Minister said. The Minister told K.V. Thomas (Congress) that the an urgent meeting of the Kochi Corporation authorities and representatives of various agencies involved in the upkeep of PWD roads in the city would be convened.
