Heavy rain brings Mumbai to a standstill

Many parts of the city waterlogged; road, rail traffic disrupted for several hours; compound walls come crashing down

DIFFICULT TIMES: People wading through flood waters on a road in South Mumbai on Tuesday. Heavy rain lashed the city from Monday night flooding low-lying areas and disrupting traffic. Attendance in offices was thin and many schools did not function. Colaba recorded 200 mm of rainfall and Santacruz 142.9 mm in 24 hours.

Mumbai: A heavy downpour disrupted road and rail traffic for several hours here on Tuesday.

Over 150 mm of average rainfall since Monday coincided with a high tide and left many parts of the city waterlogged, including the Milan subway, the Hindmata cinema, the Dadar workshop, the King’s Circle, the Adala Bridge and Grant Road station. The local rail network was immobilised for a brief period and traffic in some of the arterial roads was diverted due to heavy flooding.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation authorities, personnel were deployed in the waterlogged areas to bring the situation under control. Personnel for search and rescue operations were posted in places near the Mithi river, due to a rise in the water level.

In places like Sheikh Mishra Road, Hindu Smashan Bhumi, Bangalipura B. P. T. Gate, Vidyavihar railway station and Ghatkopar to name a few, compound walls came crashing down, although no one was hurt. Around 40 trees were reportedly uprooted, but on the whole there was no loss of life and property.
