BHUBANESWAR: Orissa will have one of the three National Tribal Research Institutes of the nation and the only of one of its kind for the eastern Indian region soon. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs decided it following a discussion with the Parliamentary Consultative Committee in New Delhi late on Monday. Speaking to The Hindu from New Delhi, former Orissa Chief Minister and the Committee member Giridhar Gamang explained that the three apex tribal research institutes would facilitate undertaking of research on ground and would suggest application-oriented projects for tribal development. “The two other institutes would be set up in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh,” he revealed and added that these institutes would also suggest action plans for promotion of culture and language of tribal communities, conduct research and evaluate studies. Funding“Minister for Tribal Affairs P. R. Kyndiah revealed that the Ministry was actively considering 100 per cent funding for setting up these institutes,” Mr.Gamang, himself a noted tribal leader and musician said . Mr.Gamans said the Ministry had mooted plans to reorient the functioning of the 18 tribal research institutes already existing in various parts of the country. The Government had decided to ask these institutes to suggest activities creating economic opportunities – both direct and indirect - for the tribals.
