NEW DELHI: In the next couple of years, Delhi will find a place on the list of cities with round-the-clock power supply, Power Minister A.K. Walia said on Tuesday. Addressing the foundation day celebration of Delhi Transco Limited and Indraprastha Power Generation Company, Dr. Walia said though Delhi’s power sector had already witnessed improvement there still was scope for more. The Minister said that like the distribution system that had undergone changes since privatisation in 2002, generation and transmission sectors too would see improvement. Improvement“There has been remarkable improvement in the system and things will only improve. It is true that our own generation of power was limited, but things on that front are changing. The Prime Minister recently laid the foundation stone for construction of a 1,500-MW gas-based power plant at Bawana and we have tied up for 750 MW of power from the Jhajjar plant,” Dr. Walia said. He added that by 2010 Delhi’s own generation would touch 5,500 MW and by 2011 the city would have at its disposal 10,000 MW from its own generating sources and from the Centre’s quota as well. “Like the city of Mumbai, which was known for 24 hours power supply, we will try and make Delhi a city with round-the-clock supply of electricity. We are monitoring the power situation on a weekly basis and we are confident that in the days ahead things will get better,” Dr. Walia said. Foundation day awards were also presented to employees as well as some establishments for their meritorious services. Dr. Walia gave away the awards for the Best Run Power Station and Sub-Station. Rajghat Power House was adjudged the best power station and the 220 kV Sub-Station in Geeta Colony the best sub-station.
