Proceedings against scribes stayed

They rescued a girl from being sexually exploited

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday restrained a trial court in Himachal Pradesh from initiating criminal proceedings against two journalists for allegedly kidnapping a girl. A Bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and G.S. Singhvi stayed the order of a Shimla Court directing the scribes to appear before it on July 7 and issued a notice to the State Government.

The scribes had appealed against the order of the Himachal High Court refusing to provide any relief to them. Their counsel G. Venkatesh Rao submitted that the girl was rescued by them from the clutches of her brother-in-law who had sexually exploited her in 2003.

The FIR alleging kidnapping of the girl was lodged by her father, who had left her mother and was living with another woman, the petition by the journalists said.

Their counsel alleged that the girl was criminally assaulted while she was staying with her married sister.— PTI
