MADURAI: The southern States hold out the promise of contributing to Rajasthan’s growth as an international hub for small-scale industries, Mahesh Chandra Sharma, chairperson of the Rajasthan Investment Development Advisory Board, said on Tuesday.

In an interview to The Hindu here, he said the Rajasthan Government was working towards decentralising the economy. This was vital to fostering growth for job creation. The western model of growth was focusing on centralising the economy, which led to a jobless growth. The nation needed growth that created adequate number of jobs.

“I am on a tour of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, and now Madurai, to meet local entrepreneurs. Upon receiving their feedback, the Board will chalk out a plan to channel their investments into the State,” he said.

To promote tourism, which, he said, was important to Rajasthan, and to increase the tourism traffic between Madurai and Jaipur, interactions with hoteliers and travel agencies were held to organise travel exchanges, Mr. Sharma said.

As for development works under way in Rajasthan, he said that since the present government came to power four years ago, 20,000 km of roads had been laid. Information technology majors such Infosys and Wipro and industrial majors such as Mahindra were setting up shop in Rajasthan. Nine more universities were in the pipeline. These projects, he said, would help to make the State’s human resource employable.
