Bar Council demands dispensary, ambulance in every court

Map on availability of hospitals near courts drawn up

Data will be used for deciding number of staff and equipment required

MADURAI: Court complexes across the State may soon get emergency medical care facilities, as a high-level committee constituted for the purpose by the Madras High Court has started the groundwork.

At its first meeting held in Chennai recently, the committee, headed by the former High Court Judge, K. Gnanaprakasam, has drawn up a detailed map on the availability of government and private hospitals near the court premises in all districts.

The data will be used for deciding the number of medical and paramedical staff members, life saving drugs, medical equipment and other infrastructure required on the court premises that are visited by hundreds of lawyers and litigants and staff.

Suggestion invited

Mr. Gnanaprakasam has also invited written suggestions from the committee members, including the Health and Family Welfare Secretary, the Director of Medical and Rural Health Services, the Director of Medical Education and the chairperson, Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Talking to The Hindu on phone from Chennai on Friday, Bar Council chairman R.K. Chandramohen said he insisted on establishing a full-fledged dispensary and stationing an ambulance in every court. “The MoU signed between the State government and the Emergency Management Research Institute for operating 198 ambulances fitted with GIS and GPS could be utilised for the purpose.”

The committee was constituted in compliance of the orders passed by the High Court on a public interest litigation petition. The case was taken up suo motu pursuant to the death of a 31-year-old lawyer after he suffered cardiac arrest on the Madurai Bench premises on November 27 last year.
